New Image Art is pleased to present Pasiva Toxica the debut solo exhibition of oil painter Ricardo Partida opening July 2nd, 2022. This is Partida’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

As a painter who brings queer fantasies to the canvas, Partida forages through the gaze to reconcile the viewer’s perceptions of desire, lust, and position of power. This presentation of contemporary oil paintings is the ultimate reclamation of canonized tropes in painting with a twist of queer coding doused in sensuality. The pronounced sense of seduction radiating in each of Partida’s sensuous figurative works stems from the past and present, where he melds; the classical portrait, contemporary selfie, and memetic identifier. Partida creates exalted alter egos and performative avatars that obscure himself and the subject to create power structures that challenge conventionality. Pasiva Tóxica is an amalgamation of seduction of the queer coded villain, so buckle up!

Ricardo Partida (b. 1990, Mexico City) is a painter and graduate from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago’s Master of Fine Arts in Studio program. His work largely critiques and illuminates depictions of gender and desire in the Western Art Canon. Partida’s works create surrogacies of seduction that question conventional power structures. Through the use of surface treatments, mark-making, and quality of line, his work explores carnal desires through the push and pull of menace and allure. Born in Mexico City, Mexico and raised in the borderlands of South Texas, Partida’s work has been exhibited nationally including Texas, Chicago, and New York.
