NIA is pleased to present “That’s Different” a solo exhibition by the cosmic phenomenon Matt Furie opening April 13, 2024 from 6:00 - 9:00 PM at New Image Art.

“That’s Different” reflects the classic Midwestern response to something perceived as out of the ordinary, possibly even peculiar. It embodies the Minnesota-nice approach, veiling a subtle hint of judgment when faced with behaviors or ideas that deviate from the norm. Now, who better to defy those archaic attitudes of these cult classic American critics than the risk taker and world maker, the contemporary Albrecht Durer of the millennium, Matt Furie?

So, buckle up, kids. We are passing the very edge of what determines the norms. We are reaching beyond the point of singularity, where chaos, quantum physics, and meaning infinitely crush each other, forcing newfound configurations of analogical meaning through an everlasting medium of mankind, you guessed it, colored pencils.

Now that we are between this juicy analog plane and the next, we meet at a crossroads where the unfamiliar but somewhat familiar characters of the mind, body, and cosmic polydimensional world of the vast plane of Matt Furie take charge.

In Furie’s impalpable fabric of reality, demons demonstrate self-care, a grouping of funky figures meditate, and Pepes explores the many facets of life as an artist. These hand-crafted works on paper are a testament to the skills and dedication of Furie’s inventive nature. His hand is paramount in the analog process of illustration, spending countless hours meticulously fabricating each character, forging detailed realms of novelty. With his expansive sense of ingenuity, he takes on new heights in comic storytelling. It is as if he asks us to look at what is on the other side of Alice’s looking glass; what should we leave at home, and what should we take with us to be light enough to pass through the mirror?
