New Image Art is pleased to present, REM: Recollection of Ethereal Moments, the debut solo exhibition featuring new paintings by Lauryn Levette.

Throughout Levette’s gem toned paintings, figures are seen intermittently resting, as she believes rest is necessary to heal, function, and attain a newfound sense of peace. Healing takes form in our dreams, we rest our minds and then our spirits realign, restoring an inner harmony while setting the unconscious imagination free. In the REM cycle of sleep, dreams are created, setting the scene for the dreamscape these paintings take place in. To sleep and take the time to relax is to combat the current hegemonic capitalist culture that determines an individual’s value based on an individual’s productivity.

For Levette, her paintings take shape with her gestural brush strokes, surrealist figures, and vibrant colors which amplify the underlying ethereal quality of each work. As the artist states, “Making space to allow myself to be vulnerable and imperfect is an ethereal moment in itself. It is an exercise of agency and self love to recognize my humanity, which I aim to channel through art making.”

The body of work within REM: Recollection of Ethereal Moments, aims to open the doors to an otherworldly realm set behind murky magentas and aqua auras, where figures serenely build comfort in their surroundings. She finds power by inserting herself in a few works, but obfuscates her own image. Levette depicts the beauty and nuance of her existence as a young black woman. She balances her mono-chromatic color schemes and wide stroke paintings with clearly depicted bright portrait-esque works. Her layering techniques and compositions are influenced by the old master with a mannerist twist, while creating a more contemporary realm. Each work mirrors the subconscious mind, which is considerably the most vulnerable part of mankind.
