| The Date Farmers (Armando Lerma and Carlos Ramirez) return to New Image Art with collaborative installations and paintings, in addition to Fio’s film about their recent Oaxacan adventures. There will also be a faux shoe store, constructed by Gary Garay, featuring shrink-wrapped, hand crafted cardboard sneakers and shoes, reminiscent of a true Mexican “Zapateria”. Additionally, “Nadie Me Quiere” features collaborative pieces between the Date Farmers and Oaxacan craftspeople, and also a film about their late-night soccer games, graffiti binges, and drunken escapades in Mexico’s renowned folk art capital. The Date Farmers reference images and ideas common in their heritage, such as Indian, gang, and lowrider culture, Catholicism, jail tattoos, migrant workers, political and social issues, and spiritual mushroom adventures. The work of the Date Farmers, who are originally from the Coachella Valley, speaks of the solitary and spiritual nature of their desert surroundings. |
