ALEX GARDNER (Solo Project)
VOLTA NY 2017
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1 (Private) // 7pm -10pm THURSDAY – SATURDAY, MARCH 2 – 4 // 12pm – 8pm SUNDAY, MARCH 6// 12pm - 5pm PIER 90, WEST 50TH STREET AT 12TH AVENUE, NEW YORK, NY 10019
New Image Art is pleased to present a solo project with Los Angeles based painter Alex Gardner for VOLTA NY’s 10th annual art fair at Pier 90 in New York City. This will be Gardner’s first creative project since his solo exhibition at New Image Art last year in July, this intimate showcase of new works will feature a series of the figurative paintings upon which Gardner has built his reputation.
Gardner’s paintings have a cold, surreal feeling upon first glance but as one engages the work further, the caring hand, the gentle embrace, and the smooth caress become equally apparent. The bodies are youthfully slender, sensually sleek, and mysteriously beautiful with the omission of facial features furthering the notion of a universal human experience.
Gardner's figures demonstrate a bionic sensibility complete with their own artificial intelligence conveying the emotive backlash to a digital revolution where human interaction has been refined to a synthetic online experience made to fit within a screen. Both female and male figures play out various roles of their relationship through the portrayal of body language. Gardner’s work demonstrates a classic yet simplified style with a soothing palette and composition.
What happens in each piece is mysterious yet familiar, which perhaps speaks to the ever-changing landscape of human relationships. The sexual roles are turned around and race and gender are rendered equal. Given our current turbulent socio-political climate of gender inequality and racial strife, Gardner brakes through the noise and creates a sexy cold world of mystery, contact, and intimacy.

ATOP THE MOUNTAIN IGNORING THE VIEW
FEB 18 - MAR 11
CLOSING RECEPTION: SAT MAR 11, 7-10PM NEW IMAGE ART, 7920 SANTA MONICA BLVD LOS ANGELES CA 90046
New Image Art is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Los Angeles - New York based photographer and film maker Patrick Hoelck. “Atop The Mountain Ignoring The View" features an eclectic curation of young subjects (capitalizing on their glamor and insecurities) palms, beaches, streets and buildings. The rich subject matter creates a dialog of form and reality of California as Hoelck sees it.
The work is somewhat autobiographical though Patrick is not in the work itself there is a slice of voyeurism. The majority of the show reflect Patrick’s world - a caramel colored interior studio- house and California life. His studio is on located on a winding traffic filled street in Bel Air where if you step out at the wrong hour you might be road kill. The backdrop of his studio is literally a mountain wall.
Many of the photos where taken in this environment capturing LA filled dreams and youthful embarrassments. His young subjects are trying to figure out their next move via posing and musing while the palms sway and sky changes.
